Installation of deck footings, placement, digging and installation of all
buried footings for the deck. We install our footings in the ground for
added strength with specially engineered lumber that is rated for ground
contact. We do not do buried concrete pier footings which can be very
problematic in Minnesota with our soil and temperature variation conditions.
Buried concrete pier footings tend to heave and sink over time. Our footing
process was designed to minimize the possibility of footings sinking and
heaving with the harsh Minnesota climate changes and soil conditions. Our
footings meet and exceed code compliance in the state of Minnesota.

Before and After Deck in Apple Valley, MN. Is it time for a new deck?

A few signs you’re in need of a new deck.

Unsteady, wobbly, or otherwise unstable railings are a safety hazard and a sure sign that a new deck is in order. Simply bracing wobbly railings or hammering in new nails is not a good solution.

Railings can lose their sturdiness from heavy leaning, (they are, after all, a solid boundary people like to stand near) or from extensive rotting or damage to the deck itself.

Test the strength of your railings by wobbling them a bit or safely leaning against them. Healthy decks will have railings that feel as strong as steel. Any wobbliness means it’s time to contact a decking company right away.

To make sure no one leans against an unsteady railing. Put up caution tape or orange cones. This is especially important if the deck is not at ground level.

Before and After, what a difference a new deck can make!

If you walk across your deck and you can visibly see the boards bowing or rotting or if you walk across your deck and the boards sag, it’s definitely time to consider a new deck. Pay attention to where the sagging is occurring, sagging could be the result of water damage to joists or to the floorboards themselves, please use caution. Also, inspect the ends of the boards that piece together your deck floor. If they show signs of rotting or softening, especially if the material is wood, it’s time for a new deck.

If you’ve purchased your house from previous owners, you may not be sure of your deck’s age. A new deck is definitely in order if your deck is too old or past building code regulations. Research building regulations in your area so that you can make sure your deck doesn’t violate codes. Check your deck’s age against these regulations. If your deck is too old

The posts that support your deck are essential to its strength and long life. Posts hold up joists which hold up the decking itself.

It’s important for your posts to be connected securely to joists and flooring. Inspect the stability of your posts by giving them a good shake. Any wobbling means an immediate safety hazard–call a decking company right away.

Also, pay attention to how your posts are secured to the joists. These should be secured with heavy-duty bolts or other metal work. If they’re held together by standard nails, this isn’t secure enough of a connection. It’s time for a new deck!

If your joists are made of wood, it’s especially important to inspect them for damage, rotting, or sagging. Don’t just take a glimpse of them while you’re walking around your house–actually touch them and get under the deck if possible.

Joists are what keep your deck together and hold it up. It’s important to inspect your joists regularly because they can be a direct cause for collapsed decks or porches.

Warning signs that it’s time to get a new deck include rotting wood and material that’s soft to the touch. Joists can become unstable as a result of water damage or even termite infestations.

Contact a decking company right away if your joists so signs of extensive damage, and make sure to not use your deck until it is replaced.

Another view of the before and after!

Deck safety means your safety, and it’s important to recognize the signs that it’s time to replace your deck. Homeowners should check in on their deck stability on a regular basis to ensure that all household members stay safe.

Signs that you are in need of a new deck include damaged or rotting joists and deck floorboards, which could result from water damage or pest infestations. Pay close attention to the way posts are secured to the deck itself, and check in on the age of your deck to make sure it fits building regulations.

It’s also imperative to inspect ledger board quality and your railing’s stability.

New Composite Deck Construction and pricing, Pros and Cons, Minnesota

Composite decks, also known as “low maintenance decks” are the kind of deck that everyone would love to have. They can give you peace and relaxation in your very own backyard and you can enjoy them for years. They also require very little time and energy to keep them looking great. Last Summer we built this composite deck in Ham Lake, MN. Justins camera 11-13-12 170This deck was built using Trex composite decking in Sandy Rope color, which is a new color that was just released last Summer, and a maintenance free aluminum railing system called Bayer Bilt railing. The combination of the Trex Decking with the aluminum Bayer railing system gives the deck a clean modern look. Justins camera 11-13-12 168Many times homeowners are surprised and can even get “sticker shock” when they see the price of a composite deck, however when you consider that many composite decks will last twice as long as a traditional wood deck, and do not cost any where near twice as much as a wood deck to build, you begin to realize that like most large home purchases, by paying a little bit more up front, you are going to save big in the long run. But sometimes this does not always ease our grips on our pocket books so let me give you a story from my personal experience. I was in the market for a new deck about 7 years ago. The back of my house had looked like a bare canvas for way too long. Since my husband is in the deck building industry I figured we could get a great looking deck at an even greater price. So we sent our lumber list out to a few different lumber suppliers for both treated lumber and composite materials. When they sent back their estimates for what it was going to cost for me to build my deck I was shocked. The Lumber price for Treated lumber was about $11,000 and for composite materials it was about $17,000 (this is just for the lumber! I was getting FREE labor!). Now I know that my deck is a large deck with lots of custom features, but I was really set on only spending the $11,000 for the treated materials and maybe using the extra $6,000 I saved by not buying composite to splurge and buy some really cool deck furniture or a cool outdoor dining set, but my husband was not on board. He said that if he was going to take the time to build this large deck, he was going to do it right, and that meant using the best materials available, composite decking. He said that the time and energy he was going to be putting into the deck did not make any sense if he was just going to have to replace all of the decking and railing in a few years. Well of course I argued because being the “thrifty” shopper that I am, I just did not want to buy decking with such a high sticker price. Needless to say, my husband won. He was the one building the deck so he picked out the materials he was going to work with, even though I pouted all the way to the bank, quite literally. Well he built my deck, 7 years ago, on the back of my house that is very high traffic and faces directly at the sun for the majority of the day (I never considered these things when we were picking out our decking, but come to find out they are VERY important) and guess what? Years later, it still looks great and I have had to do nothing to maintain it. Every Spring I just take out the hose and a scrub brush, and give it a good washing and it’s ready for another Summer of fun. Picture 027Even though I was not happy when I was writing the check, I am so happy now that we built our deck using composite decking. Every year when our families and neighbors are out power washing, sanding and then staining and sealing their decks (which can take about 1-2 weekends), I am just sitting on my deck in the sunshine enjoying a nice ice cold glass of lemonade and thanking my husband for building me a beautiful composite deck. If you would like to have a beautiful deck built onto your home, give us a call today. We offer free estimates! Call our office at 763-753-9796!

Custom Cedar Deck, East Bethel, MN

We just finished another beautiful custom cedar deck in East Bethel, Minnesota. Cedar is a great wood to work with, not only does it appear rich in color and grain, but it also creates a pleasant smell that makes you want to take a deep breath and inhale while you are outside enjoying your new deck. Cedar is also a great resilient wood for our extreme weather patterns in Minnesota and it can be stained just about any color or tone to create a unique look. If left unstained, Cedar will fade from it’s original bright color to a grey, but with a light power washing and some mild detergent you can get the bright color to return year after year. This deck was built using cedar decking and railing in conjunction with Deckorator black aluminum circular balusters with custom baluster connectors and custom Cedar post caps and skirts. We also installed the boards in a horizontal pattern in the center of the deck to break up the large surface area of the deck as well as applying a double board border around each section of the deck to make it look custom and unique. This large beautiful cedar deck is definitely a space that will be enjoyed for years to come. If you have a back yard dream that you would like built, call our office today and schedule a free estimate. Call 763-753-9796 today!

Trex and Azek Deck, Low Maintenance, Brooklyn Park, MN

Here are some pictures of a deck we just finished in Brooklyn Park, MN. We like to build unique looking decks so a lot of times we will mix and match materials, we might use one brand of composite decking for the deck, usually Azek because of it’s awesome durability and the fact that it’s scratch and stain resistant And then we will match it with a different brand for the railing, this gives the deck a unique appearance that you cant get by ordering a decking and railing system from the same vendor. This deck was built using Azek Composite decking in Acacia color and then the railing was built with Trex in Winchester grey. The balusters used were Deckorator Baroque Balusters in Bronze color and then the deck railing was topped off with an Azek decking board to tie everything together and create a wider deeper railing surface that is perfect for setting drinks on while enjoying your deck. Do you need a new deck or does your existing deck need a new look? Give us a call today for a Free estimate on your deck project. Call us at 763-753-9796.

Custom Creative Deck Construction, Chanhassen MN

We recently finished a deck that we are very proud to display as our newest custom creation. Our customer had a desire to add a deck onto his brick home, but he wanted the deck to blend with the home. What better to blend with a brick home than a custom brick deck? We were able to build this customer  a beautiful custom brick and stone deck that blended with his existing brick home. We also incorporated an outdoor grill, stone counter tops and a stone outdoor wood burning fireplace with a stone laid wood box, to store firewood in. The customers home is located on a beautiful bluff so we we also needed to incorporate a railing system that would not block the view from the deck. We chose to use cable railing and as you can see in the pictures this low profile railing was an excellent choice as it almost undetectable in the pictures. We also had a space and vision restriction for the stairs so we were able to install a beautiful custom spiral staircase with treads that match the deck. This entire project took a total of 6 weeks to complete this custom deck and the customer was very pleased with the finished project. Do you have a dream for your outdoor space that you would like us to build for you? Give us a call today and we can give you a free estimate on your outdoor escape. Call 763-753-9796.
